Militia and Guard

This lesson takes 9 minutes.

Objectives

  • Explain Title 32 versus Title 10
  • Count the Guard jurisdictions

Lesson

The organized militia today is principally the National Guard: fifty-four organizations across the states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. The governor commands in State Active Duty or Title 32, and the President commands the D.C. Guard and any unit in Title 10.

The modern Guard form comes from the Dick Act of 1903 and later law. The Guard observes December 13, 1636, when Massachusetts Bay organized its militia into regiments.
