Two money sets, Home and Surface, with separate emails.

Two Layers

Home Set

One checking account, one savings account, one credit card. Used rarely, and only for true personal expenses: rent, insurance, the bill that is yours. This set stays home. A bank box beats a wallet. It does not go to a bar, a trip, or a shared apartment drawer.

Surface Set

Everyday life. Just as available, and it travels with you. Pay for the coffee, the rideshare, the thing you swipe. Prefer a different institution from the home set so a compromise of one is not both. Two sets. Not a dozen banks.

Do not collect institutions. The failure mode is ten accounts you cannot watch. Home at one place. Surface at another. That is the whole map.

Who Never Sees It

Not Shared

Not family. Not a partner. Not a roommate. Not a girlfriend, a boyfriend, or a spouse who “just needs it in case.” The home set is yours. A vetted person who can retrieve a box if you die is not a person who can spend from it.

Never Discussed

The existence of the home set is the secret, not just the PIN. Do not explain it, joke about it, or confirm it. People you love are still people who can be pressured, phished, or messy in a breakup.

Vetted Retrieval Only

If someone must be able to reach it after you cannot, that is a retrieval instruction in a box, not joint access on the app. One trusted adult. Named. Not the person you are dating this year.

Emails That Do Not Overlap

No Overlap

Each layer has its own email, its own recovery phone, its own usernames. A password reset on the surface email must not be able to open the home bank. If one inbox can recover the other, you do not have two layers.

Providers Are Tools

Proton, Google, and other mail hosts that let you run multiple accounts are useful because they make segregation cheap. That is not a brand recommendation. The rule is multiple accounts with no shared recovery. The host is furniture.

High-Risk Email

Store keypads, loyalty sign-ups, public Wi-Fi, one-off merchants, contest forms, the tablet at a register. That address is disposable. It never touches the home bank, the home card, or the mail you actually read.

Home Email

The bank, the credit union, the card that does not travel. It never appears on a store screen. It is not the address you give a bartender.

How You Spend

Purchases on Credit

Buy with a credit card. Under the Truth in Lending Act the statutory cap on unauthorized use is $50, and you dispute on the issuer’s money, not yours. Dispute a card charge in writing within 60 days of the statement (15 U.S.C. § 1666). The Fair Credit Billing Act lets you withhold the disputed amount while the issuer investigates.

15 U.S.C. § 1643 (TILA); 15 U.S.C. § 1666 (FCBA / Reg Z)

Debit Is the ATM

Debit is for cash out. Never a purchase. Never a restaurant. Never a keypad. A debit swipe takes money that is already yours. Under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, liability is time-tiered: $50 if you report within two business days of learning, $500 if you wait, and uncapped if you miss the sixty-day window after the statement. Speed is the protection. That is the opposite of a credit card.

15 U.S.C. § 1693g (EFTA / Reg E)

Debit-as-Credit Does Not Fix This

Choosing “credit” on a debit card, or a debit card with a Visa or Mastercard logo, still pulls from the deposit account. Regulation E applies, not TILA. The money is gone while you argue. The logo is not the law.

A PIN-less debit is still an electronic fund transfer from a bank account.

If You Do Not Have a Credit Card Yet

Do not spend from the account that holds rent. Cash from an ATM is cleaner than a debit swipe. When you can hold a starter credit card, that is the purchase instrument. Until then, the rule still holds: debit does not leave the machine.

Not legal advice and not a product pitch. This is the structure of the consumer-protection difference, and a way to keep one compromise from opening everything. Read your own bank’s terms. Network ’zero liability’ policies sit on top of the statute and can be withdrawn.
